The whole point of the book of Hosea is for us to repent of the ways that we are like Gomer. Let me describe her for us one last time, because in this book she plays the role of "us." She was promiscuous from the start, even after her marriage covenant. She enjoyed chasing after and loving whomever or whatever; her heart was fickle not faithful. She enjoyed the lust and attention of other lovers. She was not interested in an intimate relationship with God, but she was more than willing to be intimate with strangers in order to get what she desired. Even though she knew she was loved, her greedy heart wanted more. So she sold herself over and over and over to get more of what she wanted. In the end she sold herself one too many times and found herself enslaved, cut off, alone. So God bought her out of bondage. He freed her from the enslavement of her sin and he pleaded with her, “Come, return to me.” That is the story of “us” in Hosea.
