Scandalous Love: The Response to Love

Last week we saw God return to Hosea again. He commanded Hosea to LOVE a woman who is loved by another and is an adulteress. At first he was just supposed to marry her, but now he had to love her. He was to prefer her, desire her, and favor her1 for no other reason than that God chose for him to do so. God was calling Hosea to be gracious with Gomer, mirroring God’s graciousness to his people. YHWH chose to love Israel. He was showing her “affection based on a close relationship” even though there was no relationship. He preferred her, desired her, and favored her2 for no other reason than that He chose to.

This is Grace. God chooses to love out of his sovereign will because he is a loving God.  Exodus 34:6 says that “God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”  But in order to love Gomer he would have to buy her back, as she had  been sold into slavery. So he gathered everything he had and paid the price to free her and bring her home to him.  This is a stunning picture of what God did by sending his son to die for us. God gave everything to free us from the penalty of sin.

This message answers the questions: What does he do with her now? What happens next?
