Last week when we ended John 10, a group of Jews were ready to stone Jesus because he claimed to be “One” with the Father. They did not kill Jesus… Not yet. He escaped and went North of Jerusalem up in the country where John the Baptist had been baptizing.
For the moment Jesus is safe and fruitful, because many people were starting to believe in Jesus.
Jesus' masterpiece begins in John 11.
1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.
Chapter 11 opens by introducing us to three important people in Jesus life. Up till now every story John has told us has been of a public nature. Jesus teaches and feeds crowds; he speaks as he walks through the Temple etc… This story is different, like they say in movie trailers… “This time it’s personal.”
