This week we are going to be looking at the life of one of the Bible’s bad guys. The story begins in Joshua 7. The year is 1450 BC. Forty years before this, the Children of Israel escaped Pharaoh and Egypt by crossing the Red Sea into the wilderness. They could have entered right into the Promised Land, but they refused to trust God, so that generation ended up wandering around the Sinai Peninsula wilderness for 40 years. As the people entered the Promised Land, YHWH promised that they would defeat every town, every nation, and any enemy that stood in their way if only they would be his people. The Israelites had seen YHWH’s amazing power, so they decided that they would become the people of YHWH. The leader of Israel was Joshua, and he warned the people that YWHW was a holy God and they had to carefully obey everything he commanded. They said that they would.
But what went wrong? What can we learn from this Bible bad guy? There are probably many more lessons, but as I studied I found three hard lessons about sin that all of us must learn, and an extraordinary fourth lesson about hope that we absolutely must understand!
