essentials: The Criteria of Greatness

This morning begins a new series from the book of Matthew. Matthew, more than any other Gospel writer, captured the teachings of Jesus. In chapters 5-7 you will find the “Sermon on the Mount.” In chapter 10 Jesus teaches the weightiness of being his disciple. In chapter 13 Jesus teaches what the kingdom of heaven is like. Then we come to what I am calling “The Essentials,” chapters 18-20, the fourth of six major teaching sections in this book. These are three power packed chapters. I personally think they were spoken at one time or in one very short period of time while Jesus was traveling from Galilee to Jerusalem during the last few weeks before his death. We are going to walk carefully through these chapters. They cover some HUGE issues: greatness and humility, marriage and divorce, church discipline, the seriousness of causing others to sin, how to handle repeated forgiveness, refusing to forgive, money and wealth, generosity and grace, and so much more. We are in for a great ride!
